US filling quote guide

Dental Filling Cost in the US

A filling fee depends on the tooth, restoration surfaces, material and included visit services. Ask for those details before comparing an advertised cavity-filling price with your treatment plan. This guide does not invent a national average or import Canadian suggested fees into a US quote.

Key takeaways

  • A surface is not another tooth.
  • Match the tooth, material and restoration extent.
  • Compare the whole uninsured visit total.
  • Subtract only confirmed insurance payments.

Cavity filling cost by tooth and surfaces

Ask the office which tooth is treated and how many surfaces are restored. Two surfaces on one tooth are not two separate teeth. A small front-tooth restoration should not be compared as the same procedure as a larger molar filling.

Request the procedure code and an explanation in plain language. The code, tooth and proposed material help you match two quotes. The price should come from the office, not from multiplying the lowest advertised surface price.

Composite versus other filling materials

The ADA describes material choice as a decision to discuss with the dentist, including appearance, durability, coverage and patient cost. Those considerations do not determine which restoration your tooth needs.

Ask whether the fee changes with the proposed material and whether the insurer uses a different allowance. If the plan has an alternative-benefit rule, establish the actual benefit and patient balance rather than assuming the quoted composite fee is fully allowed.

Tooth filling price without insurance

Ask for the full self-pay visit total, including only proposed examination or imaging billed separately. Check whether an earlier consultation is credited and whether a later adjustment is included. A starting price for placement alone can omit other charges.

For illustration only, two separate US$180 fillings plus an US$80 assessment total US$440. These invented inputs show addition, not typical US prices. If the exam is included, the total is US$360. Keep unknown items unresolved until the office answers.

Replacement fillings and a changed treatment plan

Ask whether removing the old restoration and placing the new one are included in the proposed fee. The clinician may find a different scope after assessment. A replacement is not necessarily the same service as an initial small filling.

If a dental crown or root canal treatment is proposed instead, request a new complete plan and its clinical explanation. A cost page cannot decide which alternative is appropriate. Do not use a cheaper repair price to postpone assessment of a damaged or painful tooth.

Insurance allowance versus the provider fee

Ask for the allowed fee, deductible, coinsurance, network rules, remaining annual maximum, waits, frequency limits and exclusions for your actual procedure. A plan summary percentage is not automatically applied to the entire office quote.

In a hypothetical case with a US$250 provider fee and a confirmed US$100 payment, US$150 remains before other agreed charges. Those values are not a policy offer. The written claim estimate can change, so keep it separate from your treatment quote.

Payment planning and a final checklist

If financing, enter the actual balance, down payment, APR and term. Compare fees and total repayment. A small monthly amount can conceal a longer or more expensive loan; promotional terms need their own contract review.

Which tooth and surfaces? Which material and code? Which exam and imaging charges? What changes if more damage is found? What follow-up is included? Keep those answers beside the price before comparing providers.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What does a cavity filling cost without insurance?
Get a complete self-pay quote for the actual tooth, surfaces and material. This guide does not establish a new verified national range.
Does two surfaces mean two teeth?
No. It describes the extent of a restoration on one tooth.
Is replacement charged like a new filling?
Ask whether removal, assessment and the proposed new restoration are included. The scope can differ.
Can I use the Canadian price table?
Not as US fee evidence. Country-specific procedures and prices require their own sources.
