Baby teeth and tooth loss in children
When do toddlers get molars?
Cleveland Clinic gives first molars at about 13 to 19 months and second molars at about 23 to 33 months, depending on the tooth, and says timing varies by child. HealthyChildren.org says baby back teeth typically come out between about ages 10 and 12. A loose adult tooth will not tighten on its own, so see a dentist.
When do toddlers get molars?
Cleveland Clinic's eruption chart gives these ranges: lower first molars about 14 to 18 months, upper first molars about 13 to 19 months, lower second molars about 23 to 31 months and upper second molars about 25 to 33 months. It says these are general estimates and that timing varies by child. The first molars therefore usually appear in the second year, and the second molars toward the end of the third year.
What are the other teeth timings?
Cleveland Clinic's chart gives lower central incisors about 6 to 10 months, upper central incisors about 8 to 12 months, lower lateral incisors about 10 to 16 months, upper lateral incisors about 9 to 13 months, lower canines about 17 to 23 months and upper canines about 16 to 22 months. Our guides on teething explain what is normal for each stage.
What are the signs of molars coming in?
Cleveland Clinic's page does not list symptoms specific to molars. Its general teething signs include extra drooling, red, swollen or tender gums, fussiness, irritability, trouble sleeping, reduced appetite and chewing on objects. A slight temperature rise can occur, but a fever above 100.4°F (38°C) is not attributed to teething, and you should contact a provider for fever, diarrhea, vomiting or a rash.
How can you soothe a teething toddler?
Cleveland Clinic suggests gently rubbing the gums with a clean finger, a cool spoon or a moistened gauze pad or washcloth, and a solid rubber teether. It advises avoiding plastic or liquid-filled teethers, frozen rings, and necklaces or bracelets made of amber, silicone, marble or wood, and says not to use benzocaine numbing products or homeopathic remedies. If a baby is inconsolable, ask a provider about acetaminophen or ibuprofen.
When do baby molars fall out?
HealthyChildren.org says baby teeth usually start falling out around age 6, beginning with the front middle teeth, and that back teeth, the molars, typically come out between about ages 10 and 12 and are replaced by permanent teeth by about age 13. Our guide on how many teeth kids lose covers the full sequence.
Can a loose tooth heal itself?
For baby teeth, loosening is normal and the tooth falls out on its own; Cleveland Clinic advises leaving a loose baby tooth alone. For adult teeth, Cleveland Clinic says a loose adult tooth is never typical and usually signals trauma or disease, that salt water rinses can reduce irritation but will not tighten the tooth, and that you should see a dentist as soon as you notice, because early treatment gives the best chance of saving it. A tooth loosened by an injury is urgent.
How long can baby teeth last in adults?
The sources we read do not say. Baby teeth are normally replaced by permanent teeth by about age 13, according to HealthyChildren.org, and a baby tooth that is still there in an adult is a question for a dentist, who can check whether a permanent tooth is missing. We cannot give a figure.
When should you take a toddler to the dentist?
Cleveland Clinic's page does not say when a child should first see a dentist. It advises starting gentle brushing twice a day with a small, soft toothbrush and a tiny amount of fluoride toothpaste once the first tooth appears, and flossing when two teeth touch. HealthyChildren.org says checkups are usually about twice a year. Ask your dentist when to start.
