Bone graft and sinus lift

Is bone grafting painful?

Usually not much. Cleveland Clinic says the procedure is considered relatively minor and most people report little to no pain when they follow medication and aftercare instructions. The area is numbed, and sedation is an option. Tenderness, swelling and bruising should resolve within one to two weeks. Severe pain, fever or pus needs a call to your surgeon.

Is bone grafting painful?

Cleveland Clinic says a dental bone graft is considered a relatively minor procedure and most people report little to no pain when they follow their medication and aftercare instructions. That is an overall statement, not a pain score, and the sources we read do not give numbers. Practice blogs give scores out of ten but they are not medical sources, so we have not cited them.

Does it hurt during the procedure?

Cleveland Clinic says the area is numbed with local anesthetic and that sedation is an option if you prefer to be put to sleep. Healthline's sinus lift page says the area is numbed and sedation may be used. You may feel pressure but should not feel pain, which is general knowledge about local anesthetic and flagged. Tell the surgeon if you feel pain, so more anesthetic can be given. Our guides on dental numbing explain how local anesthetic works.

How painful is a sinus lift?

Healthline does not describe pain levels during or after a sinus lift. It mentions anesthesia for comfort during the procedure and pain relievers afterwards, and says swelling and bleeding usually last only a few days. Cleveland Clinic says a sinus lift is one type of bone graft, so its statement of little to no pain presumably covers it, but the page does not say so separately.

What is it like afterwards?

Cleveland Clinic lists tenderness, swelling and bruising as expected side effects, which should resolve within one to two weeks, and says over-the-counter pain relievers can help and antibiotics may be prescribed. It recommends ice packs on the outer jaw, soft foods for a few days, keeping your head elevated and keeping the site clean. Take medicines exactly as directed, and our page gives no doses.

How long does the soreness last?

Cleveland Clinic says initial recovery takes about a week and side effects should resolve in one to two weeks. The graft itself takes at least three months, or nine to 12 months for a large graft, to heal, but that is bone healing and not pain. Healthline says that after a sinus lift, a follow-up is usually about a week later.

What makes it hurt more?

Disturbing the site is the usual cause. Cleveland Clinic says to avoid disturbing the site, alcohol for at least two weeks, exercise or heavy lifting for 48 hours, vigorous spitting or swishing, and smoking or vaping. For a sinus lift, Healthline says to avoid blowing your nose or sneezing forcefully, using a straw or smoking. Our guide on dry socket explains a different cause of pain after extractions.

When is pain a warning sign?

Cleveland Clinic says to call if you have a fever of 101°F (38.3°C) or higher, increasing swelling, pus at the graft site or severe pain. Healthline says to contact your doctor after a sinus lift if pain or swelling worsens after two to three days, bleeding persists, the graft seems to have moved, or there are signs of infection such as fever or foul-smelling drainage.

Does a bone graft from your own body hurt more?

Cleveland Clinic says autogenous bone is taken from another part of your body. The sources we read do not say whether a second surgical site adds pain, though it plausibly adds a second area to heal, which is general reasoning and flagged. Ask your surgeon which graft material is planned.

Can you manage the discomfort at home?

Cleveland Clinic recommends ice packs on the outer jaw, soft foods for a few days, keeping your head elevated and keeping the site clean, and says over-the-counter pain relievers can help. Antibiotics may be prescribed, and you should take every medicine as your surgeon directs. If a prescribed pain medicine is not enough, call the practice instead of taking extra, which is general advice and flagged. Rest for the first couple of days is sensible because the sources advise avoiding heavy lifting and exercise for 48 hours.
