How long should you wait to eat or drink?

Healthline's page on fluoride treatment says to avoid eating or drinking for 30 minutes after a professional treatment so the fluoride can absorb, and its page on rinsing says the ADA advises waiting at least 30 minutes after professional fluoride treatments before rinsing, eating or drinking. A Whittington Health NHS Trust leaflet on fluoride varnish also says to wait 30 minutes after application. Cleveland Clinic's fluoride page says a dentist or hygienist paints varnish on the teeth, usually during a routine exam or cleaning, and that the treatment typically takes under five minutes, but does not give aftercare timing, so ask your dentist.

What about varnish, food type and brushing?

Whittington's leaflet describes varnish as a high-concentration fluoride gel brushed on by a dental professional that stays on the teeth for 12 hours or more and slowly releases fluoride, and says it should stay in place as long as possible to work best. It advises avoiding hard or crunchy foods for four hours, not brushing the night the varnish is applied and brushing as normal the next morning. Healthline's fluoride page does not say when to brush after treatment, and only recommends brushing twice a day.

Because instructions differ between clinics, follow the specific advice from the office that applied your varnish.

When can I brush my teeth after fluoride treatment?

Sources differ. The NHS leaflet says not to brush on the night of application and to brush normally the next morning. Healthline does not give a time. Ask the office which instruction applies to the product they used, and do not scrub off the varnish.

What teeth may look like

Whittington says teeth may look slightly yellow for the rest of the day, which is normal. It wears off with normal brushing.

Other fluoride products

The NHS leaflet says not to use other fluoride tablets, gels or rinses for seven days after varnish. Other leaflets seen in a search gave different times, so ask your dental office before using other fluoride products, and do not give children extra fluoride beyond what the dentist says.

Who gets fluoride treatments and how often

Healthline says people at high risk of cavities, including those with dry mouth, weak enamel, poor oral hygiene or limited dental care, may benefit, and that the ADA suggests professional treatment every 3, 6 or 12 months depending on oral health. Cleveland Clinic says many people benefit every six months and those prone to cavities may need it more often. The Whittington leaflet recommends varnish at least twice a year for all children over 3, adults at high risk of tooth decay and some adults with sensitive teeth.

Is it safe?

Cleveland Clinic says health experts consider fluoride safe and effective at recommended levels and that toxic levels are hard to reach with over-the-counter products. Healthline says it is generally safe at recommended levels but too much can cause harm, and advises keeping supplements away from children. Our fluoride guide covers safety in more detail.

  • When can I brush, and with what?
  • Are there foods I should avoid for a few hours?
  • When can I use other fluoride products again?
  • How often should my child or I have this treatment?
