Root canal
How long does a root canal take?
A root canal typically takes about 60 to 90 minutes, sometimes more than one visit, and most people recover in under a week. The treated tooth can last many years, often a lifetime, with a timely crown and good hygiene, and the AAE reports success rates above 90 percent. A tooth without a crown is at risk of breaking.
How long does a root canal take?
Cleveland Clinic says the procedure typically takes 60 to 90 minutes and sometimes requires more than one visit. The American Association of Endodontists says treatment is often completed in one or two visits of about 90 minutes each. Time depends on the tooth: back teeth have more canals than front teeth, and an infected or complicated tooth can take longer. The sources we read do not give separate times for each tooth type, so ask your dentist what to expect.
What happens in the chair
The AAE and Cleveland Clinic describe the same steps: the tooth is numbed and isolated with a dental dam, an opening is made in the crown, the pulp is removed, the canals are cleaned and shaped, filled and sealed, and a temporary filling closes the opening. A permanent crown or other restoration comes later. Cleveland Clinic says to expect about two more appointments for the crown, one to prepare and one to place it.
How long does a root canal take to heal?
Cleveland Clinic says most people recover in under a week, and the AAE says mild soreness or sensitivity typically improves within three to five days. Cleveland Clinic says mild lingering sensitivity is normal but pain lasting longer should be reported. The AAE says call for severe pain or pressure lasting more than a few days, and says pain relief from the infection can come right away.
How long does a root canal last?
Cleveland Clinic says most root canals succeed and can last many years, often a lifetime. ADA MouthHealthy says that with proper care a restored tooth can last a lifetime. The AAE reports success rates often above 90 percent, which is the specialty body's own figure, and says a treated tooth can last a lifetime with a timely crown, good hygiene and regular checkups, though lifetime success cannot be assured. Reinfection can occur months or years later because of a cracked filling, a delayed crown, new decay or trauma, and retreatment can often save the tooth.
How long does a root canal last without a crown?
The sources do not give a time. They say the risk is breaking. The AAE says to avoid heavy biting on the treated tooth until it is cleared and says a crown is often needed, especially on molars and premolars, to protect them from fracture, while front teeth may not always need one. Cleveland Clinic says not to bite on the treated tooth until the crown is placed. The AAE says to schedule the crown as soon as your endodontist finishes treatment.
Are root canals bad for your health?
No credible evidence supports claims that root canals cause cancer, release toxins or cause chronic disease, according to the AAE, which says those claims trace to the early 1900s focal infection theory based on flawed research. The AAE is the specialty body, so treat that as its position. Cleveland Clinic says infections from an untreated tooth will not heal on their own, which is the reason for treatment.
What affects how long it takes
Cleveland Clinic and the AAE describe features that lengthen treatment: more canals, a complicated infection, a previous root canal that needs retreatment, or the need for more than one visit. Anxiety or sedation can also add to appointment time. If you are nervous, tell the office so they can plan breaks or sedation.
Planning for the cost?
The number of visits and whether a crown is included both affect what a root canal costs. See how root canal quotes are built.
