Teeth whitening
How long does it take for whitening strips to work?
Healthline says lightening can show in as little as several days, with strips usually applied twice daily for about two weeks, around 30 minutes a session, and a shade or two of change at best. Some products use one daily application. The NHS says dentist-supervised home kits take about 2 to 6 weeks. Follow the product label.
How long do whitening strips take to work?
Healthline says whitening strips work, but modestly: they can lighten teeth a shade or two, and results may appear within days, in as little as several days. It describes the typical regimen as strips applied twice daily for about two weeks, with each session around 30 minutes, and says some products are designed for one daily application and still give similar results. Professional whitening is generally more effective. The article is from 2021, and brand timings differ, so check your own box.
How long should you leave strips on?
About 30 minutes per session is the figure Healthline gives for typical strips. Our guide on how long to leave whitening strips on covers this question and the risks of leaving them longer. Do not extend the time to get faster results: Healthline says the risk of sensitivity and gum irritation rises with higher peroxide concentration and longer contact time.
Can you sleep with whitening strips on?
Healthline does not address overnight use; it gives only the typical 30-minute application. Because it says longer contact time raises the risk of sensitivity and irritation, wearing strips for hours is not something we can support from the sources. If the box says to wear them for a set time, follow it, and if you fall asleep with them on, remove them as soon as you wake and rinse, which is general advice and flagged. Our guide on what happens if you leave strips on covers the question further.
How long do dentist-supervised kits take?
The NHS says a dentist can prescribe a kit with whitening gel and trays that fit around your teeth, worn at home for about 2 to 6 weeks. It says a laser option at a dental surgery is faster and more effective than gel alone and is usually done in one appointment lasting about 1 to 2 hours. It says the effect is not permanent and may last around three years if you follow your dentist's advice. These are different products from over-the-counter strips, which the NHS page does not mention.
Do whitening pens, purple strips and whitening toothpaste work?
The sources we read do not cover whitening pens, purple-colored strips or how long whitening toothpaste takes. The plan's keywords on them are therefore not answered here. Cleveland Clinic's discoloration page, which we cite elsewhere, says some over-the-counter whitening products are safe and effective but others can damage enamel, and advises the ADA Seal of Acceptance. See our guide on what causes tooth discoloration.
What can slow or limit results?
Healthline says existing fillings, crowns, bridges and implants will not change color. The NHS says whitening is not recommended if you have crowns, dentures or implants, if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, and not done for anyone aged 17 or under or with unhealthy teeth or gums. Cleveland Clinic's discoloration page says stains inside the tooth, such as from trauma or some medicines, differ from surface stains, and the sources do not compare results by cause.
What are the side effects?
Healthline says strips are known to cause increased tooth sensitivity and gum irritation, usually mild; sensitivity typically starts during treatment and lasts several days, and gum irritation may start within a day and also last several days. High hydrogen peroxide concentrations may damage enamel, it says, citing studies of structural enamel damage from a strong carbamide peroxide product. The NHS lists sensitivity to cold or sweet food, sore gums or throat and white patches on the gums. Our guide on why teeth hurt after whitening strips covers the pain.
How long do results last?
The NHS says around three years for dentist-supervised whitening if you follow advice. For strips, our guide on how long to leave whitening strips on reports Healthline's figure of up to six months. Coffee, tea, red wine and tobacco can stain teeth again, as our guide on tooth discoloration explains.
