Veneers
How long do porcelain veneers last?
Cleveland Clinic's veneers page says veneers typically last 10 to 15 years with proper care, while its tooth discoloration page says ceramic veneers last 5 to 15 years. The sources we read give no separate figure for composite or no-prep veneers. Care, grinding and diet affect how long they last, so ask your dentist about your own teeth.
How long do porcelain veneers last?
Cleveland Clinic's page on veneers says they typically last 10 to 15 years with proper care. Its page on tooth discoloration gives a wider range, saying ceramic veneers last 5 to 15 years and are irreversible, and lists bonding with touch-ups every five to seven years. The two ranges are not the same, and the pages were updated at different times, so treat 10 to 15 years as a typical figure and plan for the possibility of replacement sooner.
How long do composite veneers last?
The sources we read give no figure for composite veneers. Cleveland Clinic's veneers page notes that composite veneers do not need impressions sent to a lab, and its bonding page says bonding typically lasts about three to ten years before touch-ups or replacement, with WebMD giving more than ten years for some uses. Bonding is a different treatment from a veneer, so these figures are a guide, not an answer.
How long do no-prep veneers last?
The sources we read do not say. Cleveland Clinic describes no-prep veneers as a less invasive option that requires less enamel removal, though not none, that is reversible and not suitable for everyone. Ask your dentist how long they expect a no-prep veneer to last on your teeth.
How long do veneers last on front teeth?
The sources do not give a figure by tooth. WebMD says bonding is used on front teeth because they bear less bite pressure. Front teeth are the usual site for veneers, and Cleveland Clinic says veneers cover the front surface for appearance and do not strengthen teeth the way crowns do.
What affects how long they last?
Cleveland Clinic says clenching or grinding can chip or break veneers, so patients who grind may not be good candidates, and its risks list includes chipping or dislodgement. It advises avoiding biting hard or crunchy foods directly and not using teeth as tools, and says porcelain veneers resist stains but dark foods and drinks such as berries, red wine, coffee and tea can still stain them. The natural tooth underneath can still decay, so keep brushing, flossing and attending checkups.
What helps veneers last longer?
Cleveland Clinic advises brushing at least twice daily with a soft-bristled brush and non-abrasive fluoride toothpaste, flossing daily, using antibacterial mouthwash twice daily and keeping up checkups and cleanings. It advises avoiding whitening products because they can scratch veneers. If you grind, ask about a night guard, which is general advice and flagged.
How long does it take to get a veneer?
Cleveland Clinic says the first visit checks your teeth and gums, the dentist removes a small amount of enamel and takes impressions if you qualify, the lab makes the veneers over a few weeks with temporary veneers in the meantime, and at a second visit the dentist checks fit, color and shape, bonds them and adjusts your bite. Composite veneers do not require impressions.
When do veneers need replacing?
Cleveland Clinic says veneers can chip or become dislodged, that the enamel removed to place most veneers is irreversible, and that veneers are not covered by insurance because they are cosmetic. A veneer that has chipped, loosened or discolored at the edge may need repair or replacement. Because the natural tooth underneath can still decay, a dentist should check any veneer that feels loose or looks different, and replacing one means more preparation, which is general reasoning and flagged.
